Baileys Harbor’s rich and vibrant maritime history dating back to the late 1800’s makes it the ideal place to debut the inaugural Blessing of the Fleet Festival. Located on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, our fishing fleet consists of four sport charter fishing companies, two commercial fishing fleets, dozens of seasonal slip holders and hundreds of transient boats.
Dating back to the 1800’s, Baileys Harbor’s maritime industry has thrived on Lake Michigan, located half way between Sturgeon Bay and the infamous Death’s Door on the Door Peninsula. Our harbor offers crystal clear waters, world class salmon & trout fishing, and many water based recreational activities.
The Blessing of the Fleet Festival on May 20-21 begins with the Door County Scottie Rally’s Parade of Scots, followed by a traditional Blessing Ceremony over CB Radio to all vessels wishing to receive it, regardless of denomination, vessel type, or home port. After the blessing, there will be live music, arts & crafts, food & drinks and activities throughout town. The local sport and commercial fishing boats will be open for touring at the Town Marina so festival goers can meet local captains and crew to ask questions and hear firsthand stories.
Browse through the rare ship model silent auction by the Door County Maritime Museum on the Midway. The Ridges Sanctuary is celebrating the grand opening of the Baileys Harbor Range Lights featuring guided tours of the Upper and Lower Lights. The Baileys Harbor Fire Department will be doing cold water rescue demonstrations with their fire boat just offshore and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be conducting Courtesy Safety Examinations of recreational vessels.
If you’re looking for an educational experience, stop in at the Town Hall for one of the presentations on topics including Door County’s Maritime History, Commercial & Sport Fishing Industry & Legislation, Safe Water Practices, and Invasive Species featuring local experts and authors. We have set up a Meet & Greet session with local maritime historian and Author Trygvie Jensen. It will highlight readings from his novels Wooden Boats and Iron Men and Through Waves and Gales Come Fishermen’s Tales which tell the stories through interviews with local fishing legends dating back to 1850. The next session will be with Dennis Hickey, of Hickey Bros. Fisheries and lifelong Baileys Harbor resident, will be doing a presentation on the types of fishing, health of the fisheries, and how the fishery has changed over the years. Charlie Henriksen of Henriksen Fisheries and a member of the Lake Michigan Commercial Fishing Board will be discussing the politics and policies of commercial fishing, quotas and the purpose and goals of the Board and a Q&A session. Kari Hagenow, Coordinator, and Bob Bultman, a member of the Door County Invasive Species Team and Baileys Harbor Marina Committee Chairman, will be speaking on the threat of aquatic based invasive species including cladophora and how it’s our marina and beaches as well as the Clean Boat, Clean Water Campaign.
